There are great superstitions about naming and renaming boats. I am not really a superstitious guy, but I don't want to push my luck with the gods either. I hear that Poseidon can be a great protector while at the same time a rather vicious creature. I thought it best not to upset him. I asked the previous owner if this vessel had a name. He informed me that to his knowledge she did not. I found it hard to fathom that a boat 41 years old has never been named. So I was very careful to rename her in a proper manner.
I chose the name Off The Grid for a couple of reasons. First, I plan on sailing off the grid, no electricity or external power source of any kind. She will be totally reliant on the wind and the sun. Secondly, I am a Master Electrician, and I make my living working on power production plants. My job is all about getting power plants to connect to the power grid. When I come home and unwind, the last thing I want to think about is the grid. Also, it is ironic that she is being paid for, and restored off the grid. I thought that was cute.
I did some research on the Internet and learned that is indeed bad luck to rename a boat without first purging the old name. Also, there are certain procedures for purging and naming a boat. These I followed to the letter. (How to Name a Boat) Not knowing her old name, or if she ever had a name I substituted the old boat name with, "Name Not Known". I felt like her name had already been purged or she had never been given Poseidon's protection due to her condition and luck so far. But that was not a chance I wanted to take.
The renaming ceremony was conducted on April 27, 2008 at sunset. Kenny Chesney was playing in the background. "When The Sun Goes Down", was the song. My buddy Eric and I were there to perform the ceremony and plenty of good champagne was offered to Poseidon and the four winds. I trust that Off The Grid will enjoy the protection of Poseidon, and the favor of the winds from hence forth.
